What is Different about us?

The Sadler Street Gallery in Wells is unusual in specialising in both contemporary art in all media as well as in watercolours and etchings of the 18th, 19th and early 20th Centuries, and in having a wide selection of all of these.

Unusual Items

In addition there is always a surprise or two in store as Pippa Lunbarg and Steven Proudfoot, who run the Gallery, are always on the lookout for interesting and unusual items.

Early Watercolours Early British watercolours are a major feature in the Gallery. Watercolours by artists from the great period up to 1850, such as Rowlandson, Cox, Edward Lear, Samuel Jackson, William Callow and many others turn up from time to time, and later artists such as the immensely popular Edward Wesson are a regular feature.

Contemporary Art Our contemporary artists are mainly from the West Country and their work is in all media, including bronzes. Some have been exhibiting here for many years and new ones often join the list. We believe in the importance of the quality of art, and helping to create a friendly relationship between the Gallery, the artist and the customer.

Etchings There is currently a revival of interest in etchings and drypoints. We have on show good examples of most of the famous 20th Century etchers (Brangwyn, Rushbury, Stanley Anderson etc.) with particular emphasis on the marine etchers Wyllie and Langmaid. There are at least 50 examples of these two artists' and their followers' work on show at any one time.

Exhibitions We have around 7 exhibitions a year when we showcase the work of particular artists. All exhibitions include a selection of early watercolours and etchings. This is a friendly and informal gallery where visitors are always welcome.
