John Newberry RWS

Sample picture for John Newberry RWS

John Newberry RWS is a highly regarded watercolourist recently returned to live in Somerset. Subjects include architectural studies of abbeys and churches, cityscapes in Italy and elsewhere and evocative views of the Somerset Levels He studied Architecture at Cambridge and Fine Art at King’s College, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with Lawrence Gowing and Victor Pasmore. He taught at the Ruskin School of Drawing in Oxford from 1963 to 1989 and was Acting Head for that final year. He has lived in Italy and France (Dordogne), and has painted buildings and landscapes around the world, working quickly on the spot and trying to finish before the light changes. In his architectural works John usually paints from as low a position as possible so as to capture the full spectacle of the buildings he has chosen to convey as they rise up beyond him, creating unique perspectives. John has been a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society since 1995 and shows in London regularly with Duncan Campbell Fine Art, Kensington, and elsewhere.
This picture only gives one example of the type of work John Newberry RWS has produced.
