Highly regarded watercolourist with a confident, spontaneous style - subjects include Exmoor, Ireland, Wells and other cities in England, France and Italy.
Born in 1947, John Hoar is the son of the late Frank Hoar, architect and cartoonist. He was educated at Downside School, King’s College, Cambridge and the Brixton School of Building, and studied under Ruskin Spear, RA. He was Curator of the Rye Art Gallery from 1976 – 1980, and has been painting full-time from 1980.
He has exhibited regularly throughout Britain, including at The Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and The United Society of Artists. He won First Prize for a watercolour awarded by The Art Newspaper in 1988, and in 2002 was awarded The Donald Blake Prize for watercolour, The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour.
